Google+ as a Referral Source Still Dropping

Again this month, Google+ social media referrals have dropped significantly.  However, this trend may change since Google+ has been in a restricted field test and as of September 20th, Google opened the service to the public.  Facebook dominates this category, referring over 500 times the amount of Google+ referrals

Usage share of Safari on the desktop gained in correlation to the gain in Mac share, passing 5% for the first time.

Microsoft's Strategy With Internet Explorer 9

Skipping XP support, Microsoft has been pushing Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 as the best browsing experience on Windows 7 because of IE9's use of hardware acceleration and its integration with the Windows 7 user interface.  For the month of September, Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 hit 21% worldwide usage share.

As of the end of September, Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 reached 22.1% share worldwide and 31% in the United States. Share of worldwide browsing of Windows 7 also grew in September, passing 30% with 30.4% of worldwide browsing share

Google+ Already Driving More Traffic Than Some Established Social Media Sites

We have a new measurement of market share.  We are now tracking referrals from social media sites.  This measures the percentage of all web visitors that get referred from the major social media sites.

For our first article, Google+ has launched, and even in its early form, it is driving more referrals than some established players.  In July, Google+ already topped Mashable and Delicious.

Are People Tuning Out the Facebook Like Button?

When Facebook launched their updated Like button in February, there was a huge, immediate jump in the amount of referral traffic generated from facebook.com (as shown in the report's graph).  However, since then the percentage has been dropping rapidly.

Browser Wars

As we've mentioned before, Microsoft skipped XP support for Internet Explorer 9 in order to compete more effectively on Windows 7.  In July on Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9 hit 18.5% share worldwide and 24.8% in the United States.  There are indications that this strategy is working.  Although Internet Explorer lost usage share on XP, on Windows 7, Microsoft increased global usage share, going from 54.6% in June to 54.8% in July.  And in the U.S., Internet Explorer share on Windows 7 grew 0.6% to 68.1%.

Microsoft has been pushing Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 as the best browsing experience on Windows 7 because of IE9's use of hardware acceleration and integration with the Windows 7 user interface.

About Our Market Share Statistics
This data provides valuable insight into significant trends for internet usage.  These statistics include monthly information on key statistics such as browser trends (e.g. Internet Explorer vs. Firefox market share), search engine referral data (e.g. Yahoo vs. Bing vs. Google traffic market share) and operating system share (Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux market share or even the iPhone market share vs. Android).

We use a unique methodology for collecting this data.  We collect data from the browsers of site visitors to our exclusive on-demand network of live stats customers.  The data is compiled from approximately 160 million visitors per month.  The information published is an aggregate of the data from this network of hosted website statistics.  The site unique visitor and referral information is summarized on a monthly, weekly, daily and hourly basis.

In addition, we classify 430+ referral sources identified as search engines.  Aggregate traffic referrals from these engines are summarized and reported on.  The statistics for search engines include both organic and sponsored referrals.  The websites in our population represent almost all countries on earth.

The data is made available free of charge on a monthly basis that includes monthly browser market share trends, top search engine referrals, screen resolutions, top ISPs and operating systems trends.  An upgraded version is available that provides reports by geolocation, preview weekly data and other features.

Additional estimates about the website population:

Recent Changes to Site
An adjustment has been made to the October data.  Windows Phone OS was incorrectly being recorded as a desktop operating system.  It has been moved to mobile.  Several mobile percentages have been affected by roughly one to two tenths of one percent.

Our reporting structure has changed significantly to break out desktop from mobile and tablet.  Click here for details.

iOS devices inconsistently identify themselves as Safari.  This caused iOS browers to be recorded as non-Safari and is corrected starting in August.

The Android stock browser will no longer be recorded as 'Safari' and will be tracked as its own browser called 'Android Browser'.  This will shift about .9% share from Safari to 'Android Browser'

Opera Mobile share is now being broken out of Opera share.

Safari on Windows will no longer be tracked as a separate browser and will be included in the overall Safari usage share.

Safari browsers with user agents that do not have a version number are now assigned a version number based on the WebKit build.

Support has been added for the Dolphin browser for Android.

Support has been added for the Bada mobile operating system.

Starting March 31st, 2011, we will be closing the month at 5pm Pacific time.  The data from the final hours of the last day of the month will be rolled into the next month.  This change is not expected to have a material impact on share reporting.

As of September 1st, the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad are being grouped into a single operating system called iOS.

In June, we initially reported the Internet Explorer 8.0 usage share gain as .66%.  This did not include the compatibility mode version or IE 8 editions.  When those items are included, the actual gain was .86%.

Baidu search engine numbers have been adjusted downward due to detection of automated traffic.  Historical values have not been changed.

*** We have implemented country-level weighting.  Click here for details.
